Our story
The legend of theErrlKing
A crowned king from German folklore, two friends in a college mythology class, and a little legacy-market slang. Here's how ErrlKing got its name.
Chapter one
Der ErlkönigA king in the mist
Deep in German folklore lives the Erlkönig — the Erlking, the “alder king,” a spirit who rules the dark woods and river fog. Johann Gottfried Herder first brought him into German in a 1778 ballad adapted from Danish folk song, and in 1782 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe made him immortal in the poem Erlkönig, where he appears in the night mist “mit Kron' und Schweif” — with a crown and a trailing robe.
Franz Schubert set Goethe's poem to music in 1815, and it became one of the most famous songs ever written. More than two centuries later, the Erlking is still one of the great mysterious figures of German Romanticism: regal, elusive, half-seen in the fog.
Chapter two
Mythology 101Two friends & a legend
Jesse and Rusty met in a college mythology class. Both are Americans of German descent, and both were hooked on the old stories — especially the Erlking. The crowned king of the forest stuck with them long after the semester ended.
When it came time to name a company built on the most refined, most mysterious form of the plant, there was only one king worth crowning. We wanted to bring his character to life: we kept the crown, the mist and the mystery — and gave him something new to rule.
Errl (n.)Old slang for oil
Back in the legacy market, when people texted about concentrate, they didn't write “oil.” They wrote “errl.” Errl is the concentrated form of cannabis — and the entire foundation ErrlKing was built on. Put the slang and the legend together and you get the name: ErrlKing, capital E, capital K, no space. Pronounced “Earl-King.”
